This is a series looking at one of the Apostle Paul’s longest letters. Corinth is in modern-day Greece and was a thriving commercial centre due to its proximity to the sea. As a church it certainly had its problems. But then what church doesn’t have problems?

We have been reading 1 Corinthians in our Sunday services and today we come to one of the more controversial issues to do with men and women in the church. Every Christian denomination has struggled to know whether certain leadership roles should be restricted to men only or not. The passage in 1 Cor 11 is strictly speaking not about this broad issue. It is about what women do with their hair or head when praying or prophesying in a worship gathering. At first it seems a very esoteric issue but the wider issue for Paul is to do with the glory of God. What the women were or were not doing seems to have been distracting from the glory of God. Hence Paul exhorts them to change their behaviour – not to stop praying and prophesying but to do it in an appropriate way.
