Hot Potatoes

About this Series

1 Corinthians
This is a series looking at one of the Apostle Paul’s longest letters. Corinth is in modern-day Greece and was a thriving commercial centre due to its proximity to the sea. As a church it certainly had its problems. But then what church doesn’t have problems?

Bible Text: 1 Corinthians 10:1-22 |

Series:

| 1 Corinthians 10:1-22 | Peter MacPherson |

We are in the midst of our studies of 1 Corinthians and reach chapter 10 today. Chapters 5-6 were largely about immorality (ie improper relation-ships) which flowed into Chapter 7 on proper relationships. Chapters 8-10 are largely about idolatry (ie improper worship) and flow into chapters 11-14 on proper worship. A pithy summary of Paul’s ethical teaching throughout these chapters could be “flee from sexual immorality” (6:18) and “flee from idolatry” (10:14). The passage for today warns Christians to learn from past mistakes when people turned away from God to worship idols. There are dire spiritual consequences for anyone who does this. In contrast Paul says we can completely trust God who will feed us and care for us.
